A Bachelor's Degree In Science Moves Graduates Into High Speed STEM Fields

While many teenagers were hitting the beach this summer, a group of high school sophomores and juniors were scheduled to begin sampling local swimming waters for bacteria. The teenagers were participating in a six week internship program at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. They were also there to explore how tiny gene therapy particles that are part of nanotechnology can make their way to tumors inside the body and shut down cancer genes.

In another example, rising high school seniors of both genders spent six weeks of their summer in a Boston University Research Internship in Science and Engineering Program. More than 500 teenagers who has participated in the Boston University summer offering since its 1978 inception. With everyday supplies, such as knitting needles and Legos, students added lasers and motors to design and build a CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scanning robot. He also did the software programming.

"It was very different from anything at school," one student is quoted on the program website as saying. "This was all about going out and figuring out how to do something. I had to improvise - it was very intellectually stimulating."

That's the idea behind innovative college and university programs in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects: To stimulate interest in young people so that they might more greatly consider moving onto science, technology, engineering and math degrees. As part of the President Barack Obama Administration's "Educate to Innovate" campaign, schools, organizations and agencies are these days more often partnering to offer progressive programs for students considering or already enrolled in STEM degree programs.

Science, technology, engineering and math degrees come in a variety of specialties and can lead to careers that are expected to see some of the fastest employment growth. Students who major in subjects such as these might work with hospitals, healthcare agencies, and organizations on computer technologies that can improve efficiency and patient care. They might also work on ways to help secure drinking water supplies or to prevent beaches from eroding in storms and rising seas.

Careers in the STEM subjects can also help the United States remain a leader in the areas of innovation and technology. The National Science Board in a report earlier this year noted that China has shown a rise in engineering and natural science degrees, a steep rise as a matter of fact since the year 2002. In comparison, the United States, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom have not had a discernible rise.

Some of today's STEM programs are intended for people that have not had the same exposure to science, technology, engineering and math as some others. Northeastern University's "Connections" program, for example, is for female middle and high school students. At the middle school level female students and Girl Scout troops explore bugs and plants with a microscope, learn how to program a robot using Lego's Mindstorms software and gain hands-on education in engineering and science by building things. There are also programs for K-12 students as well as teachers who have the ability to capture and keep the interest of students. Through Boston University's Project STAMP, for instance, graduate and undergraduate science, engineering, technology and math majors work with area K-12 teachers to develop curricula for their classes.

By reaching out to students and teachers at younger grade levels, both traditional and online college and university programs that offer science, engineering, technology and math degrees are part of what some call a "pipeline" for future STEM degree candidates and professionals. These candidates, once they obtain their science bachelor online or via on campus, can enter careers that many feel are important to the country's, even the world's, future. More importantly, science, engineering, technology and math degree recipients who enter STEM-related fields might find their work exciting, rewarding and a service to the population as a whole.

Find Top Distance Education Courses

With advancements in computers and an increase in demand from individuals seeking ways to pursue an education while maintaining other responsibilities, distance learning is fast becoming the way to earn a degree or a certificate through career training.

Distance learning can take many forms. You can attend a certificate program or work towards a degree. Attending a college that has the proper accreditation will ensure you that the education that you receive will be just as viable as if you gained your diploma the traditional route. Higher education is no longer being associated with dry boring lectures in a lecture hall packed with students. Education is turning out to be virtual classrooms, e-books and electronic discussion boards.

Distance learning is attending school on your terms. Yes, there are deadlines. Yes, you have set material to study, but essentially the rest is up to you. You, the student, choose when and where to study and complete assignments. As long as you have a computer and access to the Internet, you can attend classes and discussions. You can submit your assignments at midnight in your bathrobe, or at 6AM enjoying your morning coffee. It is your time to arrange as you want to be able to study.

Distance learning has also made higher education available to everyone without prejudice. Many people have fallen in love with the Internet because of the amenities that it affords. When doing anything only you are judged by your words. The same thing applies in distance learning. Your race, sex, age, nationality or religious preference is not brought into your education at all. You can remain just a name and an opinion. You are not judge by how you look or the accent you carry.

Opportunities open up for those that take the option of distance learning. For example those living in a small town may not have more than a community college. If they desire to earn a bachelor degree in Computer Information System, their only option is to travel to another town to attend classes. If they have a job and children this may be the end of that dream. Distance education hands them an opportunity to earn that bachelors degree. They do not have to move or rearrange their children's lives.

Those who are looking for jobs can continue their search for a job while strengthening their skills. They can earn a degree, or even take a distance learning course in subjects such as QuickBooks or Microsoft Office. These skills will help them secure an office job. They could take a program to learn to be a pharmacy tech or a medical administrative assistant. All of these skills will help them secure a job.

Distance learning is opening doors for people every day. People are learning new skills from accredited schools. They are earning associates, bachelor and master's degrees from their kitchen tables in their spare moments. This is all possible with dedication and a desire for higher education. Distance learning is making it all possible.

Those Who Love Math in High Demand For Informational Technology Jobs

For many students who are skilled in mathematics, the idea of earning a degree in the subject is a dream come true. Many students may be concerned that they'll be forced to pursue a major that relegates their love of mathematics to the backburner, but that's not the case. Schools online offer online degrees in mathematics that a number of students would be thrilled earn.

A career in mathematics can actually lead graduates to extremely interesting places. Mathematicians and their close counterparts, statisticians, seem to work in every industry, running the world from the background. Almost any field, from banking and accounting to biological science and computer software engineering, provides viable career options for graduates with an online degree in mathematics.

One of the most applicable branches of mathematics for students to major in is called applied mathematics. Applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that specifically concerns itself with techniques typically used in the application of mathematical knowledge to other domains. Applied mathematics is used to study the physical, biological or sociological world from a mathematical point of view.

Applied mathematicians are masters are reducing practical problems in the world to their most basic mathematical units. They take these problems and employ a number of techniques, often in conjunction with computer technology, to tackle their problems. They may work on any number of issues, from determining the safety of pharmaceuticals to working with the Department of Homeland Security to study bioterrorism.

Working as a statistician is another career field closely related to a mathematics degree. The basic job description involves analyzing, interpreting and summarizing data. They use their mastery of numbers to conduct experiments and social surveys, translating the data to address practical issues, much like applied mathematicians. The two career fields are extremely closely related, and a student graduating with a degree in mathematics can find work in either area.

Online degree programs in mathematics and statistics are available at the bachelor's, master's and doctorate levels. Though the curriculum at your school may vary depending on your specific degree program, common courses may include calculus and matrix algebra, computational mathematics and biostatistical methods. A solid background in computer science, as well as a foundational knowledge of biology, chemistry, economics and even business, may prove advantageous to you after graduation.

Though the salary for mathematicians and statisticians is as variable as the degree program, as informational technology advances, so does the need to formally educated graduates in those fields. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts at least a 9 percent growth in employment over the 2006-2016 decade, with the annual mean income hovering around $65,720.

The wide range of jobs and opportunities available to an individual with an education in mathematics and statistics truly makes online math degrees invaluable. Graduates will be able to pursue a career in a topic they're passionate about. The ability of a student to pursue any level of higher online education in order to do what they love means an online degree is one of the best decisions they can make.

Online Distance Learning Education - Changing Careers With Advertising Certificate Courses

The field of advertising has experienced exponential growth in recent years. This is one of the identified reasons why many people have been seeking advertising certificate courses either to jumpstart a new career or enhance an existing one.

Online distance learning education in advertising offers certificate courses to enter into the industry. Firms in advertising prepare advertisements for other companies and entities. They also design campaigns to promote the interests and identity of their clients.

This field also includes media representative, which are companies that sell advertising space for publications, radio, television, and also the Internet.

In 2008, there were roughly 50,100 public relations services establishments in the United States. A large section of it concerns the writing of copy and preparation of artwork, graphics, and other visual work. Advertisement certificate courses then place an emphasis on this aspect. Online distance learning education in this field may also teach students to the methods of placing the resulting advertisements on television, radio, or the Internet.

Within the advertisement industry, only these full-service establishments are known as complete advertising agencies. Many of the largest agencies are international, with a substantial proportion of their work coming from abroad.

Most firms that require professionals with advertising certificate courses specialize in a specific market niche. Some companies create and solicit outdoor advertising, such as billboards and electric displays. Other firms place ads in transportation such as buses, subways and taxis. A small number engage in the production of aerial advertising.

The diversity of the advertising field is what makes online distance learning education a viable option for those who want to earn credits in certificate courses. Most positions in advertisement require a bachelor's degree, although experience in online distance learning education in advertising should be enough.

Beginners in advertising usually enter the industry through the account management or media department. For those with online distance learning education, it may be easier to find positions in market research or creative departments of an agency. These positions usually require some experience, so this certificate courses are an advantage. Completing an advertisement-related internship can be one of the ways to gain the needed experience as well.

Online distance learning education to get advertising certificate courses involves the study of marketing, psychology, and creative design. Accounting and statistics may also be included in the coursework of the online distance learning education. The programs are designed to help prepare potential entrants for careers in this field.

Importance of Online Career Schools

"Should I join an online career school?" The option which previously entailed serious ponderings over the pros and cons and viability, is now confidently taken up by most students across the globe. Since the last decade, e-learning has taken higher educational institutions by storm, as an increasing number of students and professionals are opting for web-based learning. A study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics in 2006-07 stated that about 61% of the colleges offer online courses. Whether it is a regular 4-year college or a career school wherein a student is trained in a particular field of profession, the online option seems to the most convenient one.

Online Career Schools: Value

There are several reasons why online career schools are recommended. Firstly, a career school enables students to focus on a domain of their choice, guaranteeing long term vocational development. Secondly, the online option proves practical for several reasons:

Time flexibility: In a web-based career program, one can manipulate the classes around one's fixed schedule, instead the other way round. This is a great option for professionals who are looking forward to improving their career prospects without giving up their jobs.

Geographic flexibility: Online schools can be attended from within the comfort of one's home. This means that one not only saves on the time otherwise spent in commuting but also on fuel, money and effort. This is a practical solution for those who live in remote areas and do not have career schools in the vicinity. Students can also save the additional expenditure that goes into lodging facilities.

Cost-effective: Since these schools do not have a brick-and-mortar establishment, they can offer training at more affordable prices. Furthermore, a student can cut the expenses incurred on purchasing text books, notepads and other stationery.

Learning at a proper pace: In a traditional training institute, students are forced to study at a speed the trainers would want them to or according to the syllabus requirements. The online option allows candidates study whenever convenient for them and at a pace they are comfortable with.

Technologically advanced study sessions: The trainer can simply include multimedia learning aids, such as links and relevant sites, in the courses. This eases the process for both the student as well as the instructor.

Select a career school of your choice from the website to improve your prospects in life. Top Education Guide offers an easy user interface, wherein students can select or enquire into a training school of their choice.

Technology Degrees Allow Gamers to Turn Love of Play Into Their Work

The gaming industry is starting a new campaign this year. It wants more women in gaming. No, not as players, but as employees. According to site, GamesCareers.biz, the industry has discovered that 10% of all applications received are from women. As industry studies state 38% of all gamers are female, it's a situation they feel must be rectified immediately. There is more to this field than just development and a degree from accredited online schools will open many doors.

Admittedly, video games suffer from an incredible overdose of testosterone. Go to a convention and predominantly the only females present are convention employees, booth models and bored dates and mothers. To those in the industry, this means they are missing an incredibly huge part of their market. The best solution is to employ more women, both on the development and marketing side, in order to address this situation.

In fact, the situation is considered so dire that no less than Microsoft itself held a conference in its corporate facility in Redmond, Washington, to review the problem. CNET reported that 150 people showed up, with nearly 90% of them being women. The cable news service joked that it was close to all the women in the industry.

Then again, if one reviews the employment situation, it's easy to see why many women are turned off about working in the game industry. For instance, the gaming giants EA and ActiVision are facing a civil action regarding its working conditions. Game developers are expected to work longer-than-average hours with little or no overtime. As game developers tend to be younger than in most other software providers, this is a situation that is particularly hard on young mothers with infants to pre-teens. No matter how cool their mom's job is, the kids do want to see her occasionally.

One company taking the initiative is Sony Online Entertainment, another leader in the video game field. According to CNN, they have created have created G.I.R.L., Gamers In Real Life, a scholarship program to attract more young women to careers in game development. It is being led by Torrie Dorrell, Sony's Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing.

Gamers In Real Life has already given scholarships of $10,000 each to two deserving women, with plans to announce a third this May. Another perk of the program is the beneficiaries will also be hired as interns at Sony. For those interested in learning more about this program, the Internet will provide additional information.

This aren't the only monies available to women who want to create fun as a career. One thing to consider is that game development is a part of computer science, and as such is considered a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) career. Another good source for financial aid is the National Science Foundation for an S-STEM scholarship/grant.

Finally, as many accredited online schools offer game development as part of their curriculum, they are excellent places to find out more about the industry. So, a good place for a woman to find out how to facilitate a technology degree online is through her school's financial aid officer. As it is, the gaming industry is aware of the need. It's up to enterprising women to take advantage of it.

Accredited Online College Degree - 3 Career Advancement Secrets

Are you looking to get ahead of the pack this year? Are you excited by the prospect of increasing your salary, career options and quality of life? If you follow these 3 short and simple steps, you can be well on your way to finding an accredited online college degree that can help you beat the competition and meet your goals.

Career Advancement Secret #1 - Start with the end in mind. Many people have no idea exactly what they want. As an example, an ancient Greek philosophy says "where the needs of the world and your talents meet, there lies your true profession". In other words, you need to clearly write down what you are good at. Then, you can short list the accredited college degree programs based on your strengths. Write down your 10 most obvious strengths then look for majors that will allow you to use your talents.

Career Advancement Secret #2 - Make a list of the top accredited schools that are good at finding student jobs. Not all online colleges or universities are created equal. Did you know you can actually look up the "job placement success" rates of many online education institutions? If getting the job of your dreams is your ultimate goal, doesn't it make sense to only apply to those schools that can help you get there?

Career Advancement Secret #3 - Talk to an expert. Michael Jordan had a basketball coach. Oprah Winfrey had a public speaking coach. So too, must you if you want to get ahead. A lot of people think they have to pay $200 or $300 dollars an hour to an admissions consultant in order to get their most pressing questions answered. This isn't so. You can often find free online seminars or even ask trained professionals answers to your most important questions about the right online college degree. Such questions as "how much will I have to pay if I do or don't get financial aid?" "are there any on-campus networking opportunities available" and the link.

But that's not all.

Get a Massive Pay Raise With an Online Degree

There is a vast number of people that are fed up being stuck in a job that they feel is going nowhere. There is a lot of people that are stuck in jobs that they don't like simply because they feel that they are unable to get anything better. It is surprising how many people are unaware of just how an online degree could change their life.

There is a range of different ways in which you can get your degree and some of these ways require you sitting in a classroom for many years and do classes that you may not enjoy. Another option that is available is that you take classes that are relevant to the field you want to work in but this will leave you with very little flexibility. Probably one of the best options is to study an online degree in a field that you enjoy as this will offer you flexibility.

There are many things that you need to take into account. The first thing is that when it comes to taking online education classes you will have a great amount of flexibility and therefore you are able to fit the work around your current job and other commitments. In most cases you can usually do the work when you want to as long as you complete it before the deadline. A lot of the online educational classes ask you to check in a couple of times a week for about ten to fifteen minutes but this is just for attendance purposes. There is a lot of responsibility for the student studying online educational classes, as they will pretty much be in charge for getting the work completed without much support. When you are studying an online degree there will be a teacher available should you have any problems and in most cases it is also possible to contact the other students if there is something that you are unsure of.

The second thing that you should be aware of is that when you decide to earn an online degree you may be faced with many different choices. There is a range of different degrees that are available including business, criminal justice and teaching to name a few as the list is endless. It is also possible to study masters degrees through online education.

You have to look at a degree as the stepping-stone on the path to the career that you want. Most people that achieve an online degree find that they get more money once they received a degree. Many people think at first to not be able to afford to go back to school. Getting an online degree will get you the freedom to learn whenever you decide to and still let you have a job in order to make getting an online degree even financially possible.

Increase the Interest in Learning Using a Learning Management System

Irrespective of the methods used for training, conventional or online, such as learning management systems, a person needs to feel motivated in order to learn more and gather more knowledge. Monitoring the trainee's progress in learning is one of the most effective ways to do this.

Learning with personal interest doesn't exist in the minds of many individuals. Either the content is too boring or the lessons may be very advanced to understand and master. The need to boost a person's inherent interest in a particular field or skill arises only in situations like these.

A bitter truth as far as vocational training is concerned is that, most of the highly interesting topics of a particular area of interest are not covered in conventional training methods.

People always look for appreciation and recognition of their skills even when it comes to learning. While the students in a classroom setting might want to be recognized and appreciated for the grades they score, those who learn through an LMS would want to avail the same through simple words of appreciation regarding their improved performance.

Words of encouragement for sure boost the morale of everyone irrespective of their age. By making learning simple and effective, one can provide a lot of motivation to employees or students. In most cases, people feel bad for not being able to understand what is being taught. It would do a lot of good if you help them get rid of this feeling. This can be made possible only through effective training.

A lot of good can be obtained even by monitoring the progress of students. Some notable features of a learning management system include Activities monitor. This solves a lot of problems that occur quite commonly in training. Monitoring and guiding the progress of students in their training as well as education is made easy in the case of online training.

The Activities feature helps course administrators find out the strengths of a trainee and also get an idea about where he/she can improve in order to gain complete skill in a particular area.

A feature like Activities only helps administrators make sure if the training provided has served its real purpose or not. This also lets trainers tweak their teaching methods in such a way that they aid the learners completely.

There is also a group of learners who don't need that extra bit of motivation. They are new recruits and employees who are so passionate about their work. It is not needed for another person to boost the morale of such people. The intention to learn is latent in them and they are always eager to learn new things. This kind of people we refer to as intentional learners.

For other trainees, effective training provided online can go a long way in making them feel assured of their personal and professional growth. An improved workforce holds the key for increased productivity as well as the overall success of an organization in the market.

An automated training system saves a lot of energy and time for both the trainers as well as the trainees. The learners would acquire the required knowledge if proper training is provided with the help of effective learning material.

A training method is believed to be effective only if it succeeds in making the learners knowledgeable and skilled. Deployment, usage and feedback of a learning management system in the training segment of a company can be highly advantageous in all ways.
