Course Management Systems - Handling Online Assessments for K12 Students

Managing an online course using a course management system can be a daunting task for teachers. One area of concern for teachers is how to handle online tests and other assessments. Teachers using a course management system for assessments have several options and this article will cover tips and suggestions for making an online assessment go smoothly.

Have Clearly Written Instructions for Online Tests and Assessments
When a teacher develops an online test in a course management system, they need to be sure they have provided clear instructions. Students need to know when the test will take place and how long they will have to take the test. If the online assessment has a firm deadline penalties for not meeting that deadline need to be expressed to the students.

Teachers need to inform students as to the format of the test. It is important that online students know whether the test will be multiple choice, short answer, or essay as this helps them better prepare.

Teachers also need to let online students know what materials they can use for the online test. This could include their textbook, notes, formulas or whatever materials they might need to refer to for the online test.

Students Need Timely and Meaningful Feedback in Online Assessments
For a teacher using a course management system there are many ways to provide feedback. Most course management systems have methods built into their systems that allows online assessments to be automatically graded. Those grades distributed to the online students as soon as student complete their test. This sort of prompt feedback loop is important to the online learning process.

The most easily given feedback is simply providing a grade, but students want, and expect, so much more. Providing meaningful feedback in an online course is crucial for online students. Online teachers need to go the extra mile and provide individual comments for students on online assessments. This feedback could take the place through methods provided in the course management system or through email. Most course management systems also have the ability to provide question-by-question feedback. Teachers should use this feature to re-direct students to areas of content they missed on the online test.

With a mastery-based assignment students will need to be able to re-submit their projects several times. Prompt and detailed feedback will help students meet the demands of a mastery-based assignments.

Teachers also need to find ways to accommodate students with disabilities when they take online tests. This could mean providing the online assessment through a certified testing center with a qualified assistance available for these students.

Designing and delivering online tests and assessments can be challenging. Using the built-in tools of a course management system, including an online testing tool and automatic feedback through an online grade book, can make the process easier. Even with the assistance of these tools, the online teacher still needs to provide clear instructions and give their students prompt, personal, and meaningful feedback.

Home Schooling - The Great Debate

When considering their child's future, many parents limit their choices to public or private schooling. Very often the mighty dollar wins that debate. More and more however, parents are choosing to school their children at home.

There is no doubt the public schooling system is riddled with problems. Many Secondary School teachers will tell you their main role is behaviour management, rather than passing on anything of value. Your child may be subject to bullying, personality clashes with teachers as well as peers and a variety of unwanted influences. In recent times there has been the additional fear of violence, particularly following the series of school shootings.

Australia seems to have escaped the worst of the violent trends to date, but that does not mean that a public school education provides the best environment for your child. Many public schools are under-resourced and ill-equipped to deal with the demands of the fast-paced, rapidly changing society of today.

Home schooling provides the flexibility and freedom to provide the student with choices not necessarily available to them in a more strictly structured system. They are safe from harassment by others in the school community and have far fewer distractions from the topics under study.

Most people have a mix of positive and negative memories regarding their Secondary School experience. The experiences that formed these memories depend upon individual strengths, social skills and abilities (or lack thereof). A person's self-esteem can be powerfully affected either way, by the predominant tone of their High School experiences.

For a child being home schooled in a loving and supportive environment, the issue of self-esteem is far less critical than in the Secondary School environment.

However, home schooling is not without its issues. If the parents are not qualified teachers, what guarantee does the child have that he/she is receiving a better quality of education? It's true that not all qualified teachers are good teachers, but in the Australian school system there is always the reassurance of knowing that your child is being taught by a trained professional.

Then there is the much-debated socialization aspect of home schooling. It has been argued that Secondary Schooling is, in fact, first and foremost, a forum for social interaction. Imparting knowledge to the students runs a distant second in this philosophy. This emphasis on peer interaction would appear to put the home schooled child at a severe disadvantage. There are, however, home schooling networks available that help organize excursions and opportunities for many home schooled students to interact. This would minimize the impact of any lack of daily socialization with peers and adults outside of the family.

Another major concern for home schooling involves the family's finances. Many families struggle to meet the demands of day to day living. Families with both parents there can often ill afford to live on one income while the other parent schools the child. For sole-parent families the pressures are even greater. The Australian Government provides no funding for home schooling and is, in fact, undermining sole parents who are considering home schooling, by pushing single parents of school-age children to re-enter the workforce.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to home school will depend upon individual circumstances. It will be made by parents who have taken the time to become fully informed on the subject, and who are prepared for whatever challenges their decision entails.

Online Education and Online Degrees - Many Options Available for Distance Education

Online education is the latest trend in alternative education choices. Also known as distance learning, options in online education are being pursued by people from all over the world who are looking to further their education. And it’s never been easier to join the growing class of Internet U.

Whether you’re interested in simply getting your GED or receiving your MBA from an accredited university, your options in adult education have doubled in the past five years with the advent of online education and will likely continue to grow as more colleges, universities, graduate schools, and trade schools begin offering distance learning classes online.

How Does Online Education Work?

In most cases, it is not the specific college or university that runs the online education portion of their program. Most schools outsource their internet education duties to companies that specialize in hosting distance learning classes. These companies (who have names like eCollege, SkillSoft and such) perform the actual tasks of running the online classes, assigning work, and conducting exams, all according to the curriculum provided by the specific school. Students that enroll in online education courses are typically required to provide their own computer and any necessary software needed to participate in the online classes and take the exams. In the world of online education your books, binders, and number two pencils are replaced by a PC (or MAC – but compatibility may vary), a word processor, and some form of multimedia player. Broadband internet access is advisable as well. It may be hard to get your masters with low baud.

Things to Look Out For

Online education is a very worthwhile trend in the evolution of education in our world and it is conceivable that sometime in the future nearly all official education will take place online. The internet, however, is the real-world equivalent of George Lucas’ Mos Eisley Spaceport; a wretched hive of scum and villainy. As online education becomes more prominent, there will be more companies looking to take advantage of the trend by offering sub par classes and fly-by-night degrees from non-accredited schools. Before you commit to any online education program, do your homework and make sure that the school is accredited. The last thing you want to do is spend your time and money earning a degree online that isn’t worth a byte in the job market or to other educational institutions.

First Step In Finding An Online Education Is How To Find A Legitimate One

By: Jed Baguio

One of the best things that the internet has to offer is online education. People would have never thought they could get the education that they have always dreamed of. But everyone should know that not all online education is the same. There are many online education programs that are trying to take some of your money. It is important to understand how to choose a legitimate online education institution in order to avoid wasting your time and money on scams. Educate yourself on what to look for in a legitimate online institution and you will be able to discern online programs that will truly help you get ahead in life.

The most important thing in evaluating an online education institution is to look for the accreditation. Because of the prevalence of scams on the internet, almost every accredited program will proudly display it on the home page of their web site. These programs know that they are in a field filled with frauds, so they want to make sure that you can trust that they are legitimate. If you have to search around an online education institution's web site to determine whether they are accredited or not, then ninety-nine percent of the time they are not. Although this is a little difficult since scam programs posts in their websites that they are accredited, it is the best way to start to point out potential frauds.

Next step is your evaluation should not be biased. There should be third-party reviews. This can be accomplished by doing a little searching on Google or Yahoo. Honest reviews from individuals who have already had experience with that institution are a great way to not only determine if they are legitimate, but to also get a feel for what the program is really like. You can visit this site for more information about online accredited degrees: http://www.speedydegrees.com/

The final step is common sense. This should be employed throughout the entire evaluation process. If you find the program seems too good to be true then you should avoid that specific institution. Your gut feeling will lead you in the right direction. Do not be afraid to follow your common sense.

Now that you already know the steps listed above, then you can now weed out the bad online programs. You will also be able to select the one that best fits your situation, needs and goals.

College Degrees and Online College Degrees

By: Christian N

College degrees are a necessity in today's society where education is needed to make a livable salary or to receive a promotion before another degreed employee receives it. Many professionals are returning to school via the Internet to get their online college degrees. Online college degrees enable an employed worker to attend classes and receive credit for advanced education while keeping their job and allowing for flexibility in scheduling to meet their personal and family responsibilities. Adult students make up 50% of students returning to school for their college degrees.

Schools offering college degrees should be aware of adult students' needs and cater to them. Many employers will reimburse their workers for attending an educational institute that offers higher college degrees than a 4 year college would. College degrees are no longer available for the privileged few, they are mandatory for employment in many businesses and companies. An interview will not even be granted to applicants in most companies without college degrees. Many students are returning to school for online college degrees to gain better employment conditions and a higher salary.

Advanced education opens doors for people, and allows them to obtain satisfying and engaging employment in their field of interest. There are college degrees offered in every subject area imaginable. Certain college degrees are necessary before moving upwards in the educational realm, such as a teaching degree is required before a teacher can receive state certification. Many online college degrees base their subject matter in the business area, however, more and more options are becoming available for those interested in receiving online college degrees.

Online college degrees also offer financial aid and other sources of educational funding. While relatively new and accepted, online college degrees offer a hands on approach to learning. Subjects that are taught within the online college degrees programs can be immediately applied to the work setting. In fact there are projects that mandate implementation within a students work setting. Online college degrees are gaining more and more popularity as the year's progress. With advancing technology and the demand for college degrees in general growing higher and higher, it is no wonder that 8 out of 10 returning adult students opt for receiving online college degrees.
